American Family Insurance will be first to test better-than-radar resolution data set for greater insight into severe weather in an effort to enhance claims responsiveness
BOSTON, MA, 28 January 2014, Subsidence, Inc., an innovator of next generation weather sensor hardware and data networks, announced today that American Family Insurance has agreed to purchase weather data and to collaborate on field research. The project will make use of Subsidence’s first weather data network—a dense grid of next generation weather stations developed by Subsidence and scheduled for deployment across the Kansas City, Mo. metro area this year.
“Subsidence has developed technology that has the potential to vastly improve our ability to track damaging weather, such as hail and wind, as it happens,” said Dawn Mortimer, innovation director at Madison, Wis.-based American Family Insurance.
“With this enhanced capability, we will better serve our insurance customers by more rapidly deploying our claims personnel to the areas most affected by weather,” said John Kluesner, American Family’s centralized service director. “We also will have a stronger basis for proactively contacting individual customers about the damages they may have sustained.”
Subsidence’s dense grids of patent-pending, next generation weather stations detect rain, hail, winds and other weather events directly at the Earth’s surface, where the risk to life and property is greatest. This ‘ground-truth’-based detection is a marked enhancement in both resolution and fidelity over traditional, radar-only detection, whose analysis is limited to conditions observed in the atmosphere. The more detailed information collected by Subsidence is analyzed and processed in real-time to create pinpoint accurate weather data sets and graphical views of the movement and intensity of weather events that provide customers with greater insight and early detection of risks.
Subsidence founder and CEO Alex Kubicek said, “We founded Subsidence with the help of the Gener8tor program in Madison, of which American Family Insurance is a sponsor. We are thrilled to formalize our relationship and welcome American Family both as a customer and as an ongoing member of our advisory committee.”
